Salt Lake City (SLC) is the largest city and capital of Utah in the United States, often abbreviated as Salt Lake. Salt Lake County, the most populous county in Utah, has its headquarters located here. With a population of 200,133 people in 2020, the city serves as the center of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, which had 1,257,936 inhabitants in the same year. In addition, Salt Lake City is part of the Salt Lake City-Ogden-Provo Combined Statistical Area, encompassing a 120-mile stretch of the Wasatch Front and is projected to have a population of 2,746,164 by 2021.

Seeking safety from persecution in their former eastern homes, a group of pioneer immigrants were led by Brigham Young to establish Salt Lake City in 1847. Upon arrival, the Mormons settled in a semi-arid valley and immediately commenced building an extensive irrigation system to cater to the growing population. The city's street grid follows a traditional compass pattern, with the Salt Lake meridian located at the southeast corner of Temple Square, the central point of the city that houses the Salt Lake Temple. Its close proximity to the Great Salt Lake resulted in the city's first name, Great Salt Lake City.
