Silver Spring, a census-designated place (CDP) located near Washington, D.C., in southeast Montgomery County, Maryland, functions as an edge community despite not being a city. As per the 2020 census, the estimated population of Silver Spring is 81,015 people, making it Maryland's fifth-most populous place, following Baltimore, Columbia, Germantown, and Waldorf. The downtown area, the oldest and most urbanized part of the city, is located near the northernmost point of Washington, D.C. and is bordered by inner suburban residential areas inside the Capital Beltway. Since 2004, numerous mixed-use developments, including offices, residences, and retail spaces, have been established.

Silver Spring has numerous churches, synagogues, temples, and other religious structures, such as the global headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Montgomery Blair High School, the county's top high school, is unique in that no major racial or ethnic group makes up the majority. Silver Spring serves as the county's primary metropolitan area, and its revitalization has brought a diverse mix of individuals and ideas.
