Silver Spring, a census-designated place (CDP) located near Washington, D.C., in southeast Montgomery County, Maryland, functions as an edge community despite not being a city. As per the 2020 census, the estimated population of Silver Spring is 81,015 people, making it Maryland's fifth-most populous place, following Baltimore, Columbia, Germantown, and Waldorf. The downtown area, the oldest and most urbanized part of the city, is located near the northernmost point of Washington, D.C. and is bordered by inner suburban residential areas inside the Capital Beltway.
