The independent city of Virginia Beach is located on the southeastern coast of Virginia in the United States. As of 2020, it had a population of 459,470 people and is considered Virginia's most populous city, the fifth most populous city in the Mid-Atlantic, the ninth most populous in the Southeast, and the 42nd most populous in the country, despite its mostly suburban character. Virginia Beach is the largest city in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, situated at the Atlantic Ocean's mouth on the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to numerous smaller towns, counties, and cities, the region, also known as "America's First Region," includes the independent cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk.

Virginia Beach, with its miles of coastline, is a popular tourist spot known for its beaches and numerous hotels, motels, and restaurants. The city also has several state parks, protected beaches, military bases, large corporations, Virginia Wesleyan University, Regent University, Christian Broadcasting Network's international headquarters and television broadcast studios, Edgar Cayce's Association for Research and Enlightenment, and nuffield health. Every year, Virginia Beach hosts the East Coast Surfing Championships and the Something in the Water music festival. On April 26, 1607, the English colonists first landed at Cape Henry, where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, before establishing Jamestown.
