West Palm Beach, the largest city in Palm Beach County, Florida, is also the county seat. It is situated west of Palm Beach, which is located on an island barrier across the Lake Worth Lagoon. In 2020, the city's population was 117,415. West Palm Beach is the hub of the Miami metropolitan region, which had a population of 6,138,333 in 2020. It became a city in November 1894, two years prior to Miami, making it the oldest incorporated municipality in the South Florida region. The distance between Downtown Miami and West Palm Beach is roughly 68 miles (109 kilometers).
West Palm Beach's climate is classified as tropical rainforest (Köppen Af) with average monthly highs of 64.4 °F (18 °C). The city falls under USDA hardiness zone 10b with an annual mean low temperature of 37.7 °F (3 °C). The hot, humid, and rainy season, known as the wet season, occurs from May to October. However, since 1888, there have only been four instances of temperatures exceeding 100 °F (38 °C). From April 15 to October 10, temperatures of 90 °F (32 °C) are typical, accompanied by afternoon thunderstorms and sea breezes that cool the air for the rest of the day, occurring more than half the time during this period.
